Shema: Parenting as a Spiritual Practice
“Shema” means “listen” and “hear”—and it is the watchword or creed of Judaism from the Torah (Deuteronomy 6:4). In parenting as a spiritual practice, working from this text as a baseline, we will build an individualized, Jewish family practice of spiritual connection between parent, child, and the Divine.
1. Listening to the Child — Every child reflects the Divine (B’tzelem Elohim).
We work on cultivating attunement to your child’s emotional, spiritual, and developmental needs—learning to respond with presence, compassion, and curiosity. Through ritual (like the bedtime Shema), storytelling, and sacred attention, we honor your child as a spiritual being in their own right.
2. Listening to the Self — Articulating Your Values
What kind of Jewish home do you want to build? What do you want your child to inherit—not only in practice, but in spirit? We explore your own spiritual longings, how you were parented, and what it means to parent from a place of clarity and wholeness. This layer includes naming and living your personal and family Jewish values.
3. Listening for the Sacred — Elevating the Everyday
The daily grind of parenting can be full of chaos and beauty. We’ll learn together how to infuse daily life with moments of holiness—welcoming Shabbat, marking transitions in all aspects of childhood, and elevating time amidst the chaos.
*Offered as one-on-one coaching or for groups of parents and guardians.
